Customer Reviews

Two packages of mantels just fell off after burningI've been using coleman lanterns for years, I have '54, '63, '68, '72, '86, and a '92 model lantern, it may just be a bad batch of mantels, but these burn to a good ash, they light easy and put off a good glow, then after you turn the lantern off and they cool off, the mantel falls off, it's like the tie on string gets burnt enough to disappear and nothing holds the mantel on, the mantel is in one piece, but the tie on string is gone 2I use a couple of propane lanterns in my outdoor ...I use a couple of propane lanterns in my outdoor eating/cooking area so I don't have to run electric lighting. They see an hour or so of use twice a week all summer. I get maybe 12-18 months out of these on average.20 years ago, mantles lasted longer, but these are OK. I think they made them less hazardous and that involved some compromises. 4Exactly what they say they areThese are perfect replacements. Not much to write a review on. You put them on and light them and they go to the size they are suppose to. There is a picture of the size before they were lighted and shrank to size by the lighting of them. They are very delicate after so be careful with them.Overall these are exactly what they are suppose to be. 5I think Coleman mantles are the best. I can't truthfully say it's by a wide ...Of all the parts on your Coleman lantern, this is the one you will replace most. Compared to everything else, even the glass, this is the most fragile part. Having tried other off brands, I think Coleman mantles are the best. I can't truthfully say it's by a wide margin, but having had the lantern fall over in my trunk in the Coleman carrying case, they seem to be a bit more robust. And call me old-fashioned, but I like the tie-on version better than the wire twist ones. I like the way I can adjust the "pleats" evenly around the gas output, which I can't seem to do as well with the wire. 5QualityWe get used to certain products that simply do exactly what they are supposed to, in this case, its Coleman, and the design has been perfected long ago. ALWAYS have some extra on hand. I am a HARD camper, meaning things get tossed around a lot. Mantels after use are fragile, some day I may remember that. 5Is there a better alternative?I have only used genuine Coleman mantles in the past, and have always had success. But with this new pack, the first mantle bag I lit burned down to ash (as they are supposed to), but with two tears in the ashed bag. So I had to start over. The second bag burned to ash perfectly without any tears and it lights up brightly. This is a 4-pack, so I have two mantles left. Assuming the next two mantles will be okay when needed, that would mean a 25% failure rate. A 75% success rate (assumed) would not be good enough for 5 stars. So 3 stars seem to be the appropriate rating.I have read there are other mantles which are stronger, but which may emit radiation. So, until I find a better solution, I'll stick with Coleman, for now, and hope that this was a fluke and not an indication of any change of quality. 3three out of fourI opened the package and It had only three mantels in the pack that should of had four. There's no place for the fourth one to hide in that little plastic package. Not worth fighting over the missing mantel so I'll just have to live with it. Probably just a production issue and a fluke but that's why I gave it two stars. 2Always good to have extra.Coleman mantles work well and it s a always good to have an extra pack as you never know when the old one will fall apart. I ve bought too many at camp stores when I failed to bring extras 5Stay with tried and true.I bought the spring clip models thinking they would be easier. I quickly ruined both sets. They were difficult to get distributed around the nozzles and ballooned correctly. So I bought the old fashioned Coleman models. Tied them on. They ballooned perfectly. Burned them. Fired up the lantern. Works perfectly again. Lesson learned. Stick with what you know works. 5Esay to mount and last longThese mantles are used in Colemans fuel lamps. I use a twin mantle lamp with Coleman fuel. The mantles are very simple to mount by pushing the mantles over the last ends of the tube where the gas comes through. The last ends of the string are cut off-ready to go.To maintain the mantles its important to have pressure in the tank and to listen that gas is coming. You will hear a noise. I made at the first usage the mistake that there was not enough pressure and in one mantle burned a hole. This prevented the mantle to shine bright. I replaced it. It was my mistake. When you do all correct the mantles last long.Good product. 5
