Customer Reviews

good price but difficult installWell I managed to install it, as mentioned previously by other buyers, no instructions included, and if you look closely at the photo's there are several different assembly configurations shown, so god only knows what your going to get. My biggest issue was 6 loose flat washers included in the hardware bag that I did not know what to do with. Upon closer examination I found that 4 screws which came installed from the manufacturer would not sit flat and tighten properly due to a bend in the bracket which was located to close to the head of the screws hole, in effect a clearance problem. The best solution for this I could find (after looking for new or different hardware) was to take 2 flat washers for each screw (8 total) and grind one side flat. Then two of the washers per screw would create enough clearance/surface for the screw to tighten properly. The pictures are also confusing as to the orientation of the W bracket and down strut. Without instructions you have to experiment mounting the brackets/struts inside vs. outside of each other which is a major PIA.At this point I am content with the installation and only hope the performance exceeds the difficult install, and by the way I am an engineer. Patience is essential. 3Awesome deal at 20 something bucks!Just to be clear, as I find a lot of "honest" reviews are written by people who received the product at discount/for free for their review. This is not me, I bought this as I'm converting my high performance road bike to a commuter.Let's get the drawbacks out the way first. No instructions, I could see how this would bother some people, I enjoyed the challenge of figuring it out. Also they say in the description that they can email instructions. Another con might be that it's pretty fiddly to install. But I think this is due to it's universal design, I could see how this product would be adjustable to most bikes. It mounds great on my road bike (which has no eyelets for racks, mudguards or anything other than brakes and gears). So, on to the good stuff. For $23, this seems like an incredibly good deal. Granted, I got it, installed it and went for a 20+ mile road test all today, so can't speak to longevity, I also didn't load it very heavy. I can't imagine ever wanting to carry around 110lbs of stuff, but I could see how it'd handle it. It's a simple design really, but very smart, and I can see how it'd easily manage heavy loads.Basically if you're looking for a strong rack, or one that'll fit a bike without mounting spots, or just one that's a good deal. This is it. I'm very impressed. If I Have any negative experiences I'll be sur to update this review appropriately, but I'm happy! 5Awful in too many ways. Buy at own risk. All I did was read the product title, saw it had a passable rating and ordered it without reading the reviews. Terrible mistake... here's the play by play.First of all, I check the mail and receive a poorly taped box that looks like it was kicked all the way from the distribution center. Maybe it was the post office, maybe it was amazon and I usually don't care unless the items are damaged. In this case, it didn't.Then I open said box and to my surprise is plastic bag containing all the pieces of this thing, held together with a ziptie, and *no instructions*.So I check amazon and there happens to be a link to a pdf document that pulls up the instructions. This link, however, is dead end and no instructions are to be found. That leaves only two options: Return this thing or keep it and make the most of it. I chose the latter becouse I believe I should have read the comments. With this in mind, I bring up my tools and try to assemble it as best as I can: After all it's just a few nuts and screws, right?...wrong! The thing attaches to the bicycle in three points: one clap on the seat post and another two claps that each go to one seatstay. While the placing of the first is kind of obvious, the other's aren't: if it's too high the thing will slip under it's own weight and if it's too low the screws will hit the cassette. So I attached them to the place I assume is best. Also, consider that the rods that go from this thing to the seatstays are adjustable, which means that it's a rod in a tube that once the proper height is set, is secured by tightening a screw. This being said, between the seatstay claps that are in an unsure location, and the load bearing rods that are held together by friction, I have my doubts that this thing will hold 110 pounds.... probably not even half that.I had considered throwing some saddlebags over this, but I'll just limit myself to lashing my backpack on to this and hope for the best. So, long story short: if you need something a rack to carry a light load ( school backpack, work briefcase, pair of bags from the convenience store, anything about 10 pounds), get yourself something from anything big box store: it will come with instructions and will be backed by a brand name you probably know. If you need to carry a medium load ( toolbox, groceries, large reusable water bottle, anything about 30 pounds ) then go to your local bikeshop and get a real rack. If you need something to carry a heavy load ( anything heavier than 30 pounds ), you might want to permanently modify your bike with the help of a welder ( assuming your bike can handle the load ) or get a specialty bike designed for your needs. The reason I stress this is not becouse of this item, if and when it bends, breaks or fails it's easily replaceable, but becouse when this happens it will likely do so while droping carrying something much more valuable and while in motion risking and injury. 1Great Quality for a Good PriceI recently purchased a great quality bike for the first time in my life, and I found myself wanting to ride it absolutely everywhere! I'm a student, so I regularly ride it to campus, but I also take it to the store, the park, and to visit friends and family. I frequently need to transport large items that don't fit in my backpack, so I needed something to tie things down to. I was very happy to find such a great priced cargo rack with incredible reviews, and it did not disappoint!Pros- Very light, yet can support a LOT of weight!- Great design that allows you to easily attach bungee chords or rope to tie multiple things down.- Easy to put together-- doesn't take very long, and all of the tools are included.- The back of the rack has a reflector, so safety was in mind in the design. I was worried it would block my bike's reflector, but they were one step ahead!- They provide little rubber slips for some of the joints in case your bike has a slightly smaller diameter like mine.- They also provide a little bungee chord that works very well with the design of the rack. I left it on there and use it regularly with my two additional bungees.- I've had it for about a month now, and I use it regularly, and I haven't noticed any wear or tear.- It helps prevent rain splatter from the ground to my back!Cons- The cargo rack doesn't come with paper instructions, but you can easily find the instructions online here: . Arguably, this is a pro because we aren't wasting paper!- The rack is somewhat narrow, which makes it more difficult to keep larger objects on top of it. This keeps the weight down, though, and you can easily add a piece of wood or cardboard to extend the edges, if needed. All in all, this will be the cargo rack I come back to when I convince my husband to get a bike. It is super high quality and a price you can't beat. 5Great cargo rack for the price!I'm only giving this 4 stars for 2 reasons. 1 I just got it so haven't tried it out much yet. 2 It came with no instructions. That being said, it's fairly easy to figure out from the pictures. I bought it to go on a 2005 Specialized Works M5 that I found for $25 at the local community center. The people there rebuild donated bikes and sell to the public for $25. I need a bike because I don't own a car And needed a way to get to the grocery store. The rack seems to fit perfectly and is solid. Seems very well-made. Will allow me to put panniers or even a basket/milk crate on the back for carrying groceries. Looks like it will work perfectly and was it really good price! I priced some at local bike stores anywhere from $50-$100. I actually have had the small saddlebags for a long time. Found them at a flea market. First time I've gotten to use them. But I'm going to make a larger set out of military musette bags. 4Good rack if you're handy and not too short. As others have said, there were no instructions with it. However by going on Amazon and referring to the pictures with the product description I was able to mount it successfully and happy with it even though it appeared it might have been returned as one part was scratched. It is light and sturdy as it is made mostly from aluminum. I could not mount it on my wife's bike because she is short and there was not enough room below the seat. As others have stated the W shaped brackets were too long to fit the holes so I just sprung them in and they are fine. I guess their purpose is to prevent loose flapping items from getting to the wheel and that is not a bad idea. I also had to cut the rubber strips that go inside the clamps on the downrods as they were too long as delivered. If you are not shorter than about 5'4" and handy this could be a good bike rack for you. 3Good bike rackThis bike rack has supported many items and has also semi acted as a splash shield for the back wheel, so bonus. Overall, very pleased with the purchase. However, for other buyers, I just want to say that the top part of the bike rack probably would have been sufficient for my needs for 2 reasons.1) The top part alone is very lightweight, but the connecting braces are A LOT heavier. It added a lot of weight to the back of my bike that I didn't really appreciate. I'm thinking the top part is aluminum but the bracing is a heavier metal.2) The installation of the top part took about 3 seconds. The installation of the rest of the bracing took like... I don't know, 45 sweaty minutes in the garage. The inside of the bolt/nut complex had some kind of rubbery stuff on the inside that I assume was there by design to compensate for vibrations on the bike. While that's very secure post-install, it took a LOT of elbow grease at weird, uncomfortable angles to get everything on which I immediately regretted since I'm not transporting anything heavy that requires this much bracing. However, by that time, I didn't want to spend another sweaty 45 minutes undoing everything, so the whole complex has been sitting on my bike ever since. If you're not transporting watermelons or water jugs on the back of your bike, you might want to get the version of this product without the bracing and save yourself the trouble. 5Not good for shorter peopleNot bad for oddly shaped bikes, but if your seat isn't high enough the rack will start to drag on your back tire. I'm 5'4" and ride my bike 5 miles to work every day. After a few weeks it loosened up and the bottom of the rack was scrapping on my tire, and I have to keep tightening everything to keep it from happening. It's also a bit clunky looking, with all the brackets. 3Pretty good rack if your bike has disc brakesThis rack works pretty well on my Cannondale F7 mountain bike. I originally bought a cheaper rack on Amazon, but found it couldn't easily be attached due to the disc brakes on my bike. This rack, in comparison, easily mounted on the back of the bike and seems very sturdy. I've put almost my entire weight on it and it didn't even seem to flex a little bit, so it definitely seems to be able to carry the weight that it is rated for. It was very easy to install, much easier than I anticipated it was going to be after reading the installation instructions sent to me by the seller. Once I understood how it is supposed to work, it only took about 10 minutes to get it installed. I did not install the U-brackets on my bike, since I am not using the rack for panniers, I didn't see a point. They don't add any structural rigidity that I can see, so they are just extra weight. I mounted a "large milk crate" from a local retail store to the top with Velcro straps, and it was easily able to carry home my extra groceries that didn't fit in my bike trailer. I couldn't find an easy way to mount my bike light directly to this rack, but I did find that the adjustment screws underneath the top sliding plate were an excellent place to mount a 15" piece of 1/2" PVC pipe that I could attach my light to. Overall, this was definitely worth the price I paid for it, and I would highly recommend it if you have disc brakes or some other attachment on your bike causing you headaches with regular mounts. 4Well made and very adjustableIt's a well made and well designed product. Very adjustable, as is needed to clear brake wires and disc brake components. So for me I wasn't able to mount the unit so that the bars going down from the rack to the rear stays were symmetrical. It's hardly noticeable and not unsightly. You'll definitely need a metal file to smooth out areas of the pannier mounting brackets (the 'w' shaped part on each side) which were machine drilled and not smoothed out (I've attached a photo). You won't be able to mount these parts to the main body of the bike rack without smoothing the holes with a metal file. Not a big deal to me and only a 1/2 star deduction because otherwise it's well constructed. You're also going to need the right size small open end and or box wrench (or small, slim adjustable wrench) to hold the nuts as you're tightening the hex head bolts: the wrench provided is garbage and won't do the job. And it would be easier if you had a helper to hold the parts in place while someone else tightened the bolts. You really need two hands to hold the components in the proper position, and two hands to tighten the bolts. Yes I did it myself; easier with a helper though. I did take off another half star to ping the manufacturer for its absurd claim that it "supports 200 lbs and you can test it yourself and if it is deceiving you can get all of your money back! . . .." Hopefully no one would accept such ridiculousness at face value anyway. All things considered though I'm happy with the product and would recommend it. 4
