Customer Reviews

Must Have For EmergenciesAs a former park ranger, I have used these in the backcountry and found them far preferable to iodine tablets. I bought this one for my emergency pack at home. With all the news about hurricanes this year, it just seemed like a good thing to have handy. The efficiency of the filter is very impressive. I like the ability to attach a water bottle. 5Purchased for Hurricane Maria aid packagePurchased this item for my family in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. They had sent word of having to obtain drinking water directly from the river and streams. After package arrived, I liked the quality and ease of use, so I ve decided to purchase two more for my at home survival kit. 4It cleans the water alright... I trust it...Well ... I am still testing it in Puerto Rico everytime I go back . Even using it at water fountains just to protect myself from the harmful bacteria out there ... Dont trust the water services as of yet. The first time u use it it tastes like isopropyl or something like that but it quickly loses the bad taste and I like that has many different ways of using it. From the extensio to reach down far or the water bag that can be used to pour as you go or stire water already filtered... I sent one to my brother the doctor the sisters and nephews... I trust the system. And I used it several times without getting sick. .. 4You get what you pay for.Went camping with it and...well for the price, it definitely does as advertised. It filtered some light green-ish river water into a visibly clear and clean tasting sort - no observable particulates. Definitely works better than some others at this price point. That said, save yourself the trouble and get a more expensive one if you are able to afford it...as you'll see why below.Onto the bad. The little water pouch it comes with is terrible as a travel companion as it is difficult to open fully and due to external water pressures, cannot be fully inflated to fill the advertised volume. Sucking through the straw itself is also a very tiring and tedious process. My two cents is to find a separate squeeze bottle of better quality that you can screw onto the end to act as a filter. Otherwise, you're in for a tough time. Unless you're in dire circumstances where this is your only way to access a safe drinking source, I'd bite the bullet and spend a little more on a pump type or gravity type water filtration system.TL;DR: Does as advertised but tiring to use due to density of filter. Peripherals also leave much to be desired. Pack away in a bug-out scenario, but otherwise get a proper filter. 3Really hard to draw water though this one, long cleaning process makes it hard to use.I just compared this to the lifestraw and it's not all that great. I suspect most here used this on tap water instead of contaminated water, and put it in a drawer as an emergency gadget. Personally, I tried to actually use it.In a nutshell:The good:Sure, it filters better than the Lifestraw. No doubt. I tested with manually (no viruses or bacterias mind you) contaminated water and inspected the result with a microscope. Couldn't fault it. The lifestraw let some stuff through, this one did not. Nada. The bad:It's HARD to draw water from this. You might die of exhaustion before you get 100ml of water in your mouth. Plus, the water has to be prefiltered and very clear or you won't get any water at all through the filter! Even little pieces of ~0.5mm will block the filter flow.So there's a few prefilters included, use them, or this wont work (that means you can use the straw about 5 times then you're out of filters by the way). With clear water, you still need to suck on it and pressure the bottle to help to get a half-decent flow of water (which won't be fast, plan 5 full minutes to drink a small glass of water). Then comes the cleaning. The tiny plunger is cool and works, but you'll have to use it about 10-15 times to properly clean a mildly dirty filter, while shaking the filter manually between the back flushes. In comparison, the life straw flaws about as fast as unfiltered water, which is very comfortable. Conclusion:if you don't need the virus filtration (which is also unverified, anyway), get the lifestraw. if you do or value the higher filtration, the personal water filter purifier might be good enough. Just don't expect to use it as easily. I'd take a survivor filter (incl. the pump activated) or other brands any day if you're going to use this often though, including the lifestraw+steripen (UV kills most viruses) combo which is pretty decent, light, and much faster. 3Great product works as intend when operated properlyThe filter works as intended and the flow rate changes based on quality of water source. It's hard to suck from and stops flowing when doing so after a few seconds, to prevent this just squeeze the bag and it will for continuosly. That is unless the water quality is really poor and it'll clog requiring you to pause for a few seconds, before squeezing again. Unfortunately once I didn't and kept on squeezing increasing force or pressure or grip and bag bursted at the inlet or neck seal. This is an issue highlighted by another reviewer and the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5, build quality should've been better offer this technique printed in instructions. The pre filter works great and after a few days is already full of sediment from my Crystal clear tap water the capacity is 1500 liter for device itself and with 5 pre filters included I'd estimate each last around 300 literally or approximately $600 bag refills, speaking of which damaged ones can be replaced by Sawyer replacement bags sold here in Amazon or any conventional soft squeezable soda bottle. At .01 microns it's better than the life straw at .02 that doesn't come with a pre filter 1500 liter for$17.99 seems worth it to me 4Great product. Life saverGave 1 of these to a friend to go on a mission trip to Haiti. He used one and his daughter the other. They were an instant hit. He wound up leaving them with the people that stay there. They said they were going to order some more of these. Great product. Life saver. 5Great Filter, Not So Great AssessoriesThis is, in my opinion, the best water filter out there. I am an avid backpacker and have several other brands of water filters. What I like about this filter is it has an additional layer of filtration (charcoal) besides the standard membrane. The charcoal seems to take the "fishyness" out of the water. The only problem I have with this filter is that it does fit properly on every bag or bottle I have. The included bag is too small if you are filtering water on a long hike. Despite this, I always carry this filter and use my other brands as backups. 5Good for personal use, too small for several peoples needs. This is good for personal use, but a bit small for more than one persons needs. We used this on a trip to the boundary waters canoe area. It works well for what it is if only using it for an occasional drink of water. Lake water tasted like it came out of a bottle from the store. However, do note that the water flow through these is enough for someone to drink from, but insufficient if using it for the needs of a group of people. Maybe this is obvious for those who have used these before, but this is suitable for personal/emergency use only. We had two of this style (the other was a Sawyer Mini) and they were similar in flow. Both worked fine, but if you're trying to get enough water to fill multiple water bottles or a pot for boiling water for dinner, do yourself a big favor and get a bigger one. Fortunately we also had a Sawyer Products SP129 PointOne Water Filtration System with 32-Ounce Squeezable Pouch version, which had MUCH better flow capacity. Even the PointOne took awhile to fill five 30oz water bottles or a small pot, but I think the smaller versions would have taken at 20-30 minutes (we didn't try it, just an estimate). That's a long time to be squeezing the bag. The PointOne also did much better if just wanting to use gravity flow, where as the smaller ones needed either the bag to be squeezed or someone to suck water through it. This comes with a 16oz bag, the PointOne came with a 32oz. That also makes a big difference in the amount of refilling time. We had an extra 32oz bag which I would also recommend.Even for personal use I would get the Sawyer PointOne. Yes, it is more expensive so perhaps not a fair comparison. However for something like this that is a fairly critical component I think the extra cost is more than justified - Especially if you are relying on this for anything more than a "just in case" emergency use. 4this is awesome! The bag allows you to squeeze it and ...this is awesome! The bag allows you to squeeze it and force water thru the filter faster so you don't have to wait for the drip like other bagless models. I love it, and have tried it with seriously gross water and we were all fine! 5
