Customer Reviews

Quality shoe!I'm using this pair of shoes for a winter trip to Japan, including a trip to Hokkaido where I expect snow and ice. The particular soles of these shoes have an outstanding record of traction on snow and ice. I bought these lace-up as opposed to the slip on version, because review of the latter suggested that they were tight for anyone with high arches and a high rise in the top of his food, making them difficult to get on. There were also some warnings in all the reviews (for both the lace-ups and slip-ons) about the shoe being a bit narrower that most customers would expect. I got a size larger than my own, and they fit perfectly. That is, there's just a tiny bit more room in the toe than I need, but they fit well otherwise. When first trying them on, they still felt a wee-bit tight initially; but after walking around in them for ten minutes, that impression gave way to the pleasure of complete comfort. The fabric out of which the top of the shoes is made lets them breathe easily. This means they aren't shoes that take a shine, like leather; but they are handsomely constructed and not only give the impression of high quality, but really are quality shoes. I'm delighted.5... a pair of MOAB Ventilators for two years and liked them a lotI had a pair of MOAB Ventilators for two years and liked them a lot, but the reviews kind of sucked on the MOAB 2's so I decided to expand my search. I hike a lot but my hiking shoes are also just my regular shoes, so I wanted something that wouldn't look out of place with jeans or chinos. If you're researching hiking shoes you probably know that's a lot to ask, most have crazy designs in neon colors. These didn't have many reviews but I like Merrell so I took a chance on them. I'm really happy I did. They fit great and they're really sturdy. I was a little concerned that they would be like my Clark's Desert Boots and fall apart the second they hit anything other than dry asphalt, but I'm happy to report that these are first and foremost hiking shoes. The soles have grip as good as my old MOAB's and I feel like I can hike in them for almost as far. They're definitely stiffer and a little heavier than my MOAB's but I haven't found that to be an issue. And they're super durable. When these shoes eventually die I'm planning on buying another pair. They look great and the hike great, what more can I want?5Not quite rightThese hiking shoes did not turn out right for me.1) As noted elsewhere, the "boulder" color is not tan but a muddy green. That didn't bother me too much, but Amazon (or Zappos) needs to fix this.2) The shoes felt claustrophobic and hot to me, with a tight upper toe area. I have high arches so this may be just a personal problem. As you can see from the pic, the tongue bulges out between the laces weirdly. I felt like I was strapping leather and padding onto my feet, rather than slipping into a well-fit shoe.3) Contrary to Amazon's "Product Description", the weight is NOT 12 ounces - that is of course absurd. The actual weight (see pic) is 2 pounds for both shoes. Apparently it is not possible to compare shoe weights on Amazon as the figures given are nonsense.Which leads me to the overall problem with this "shoe". I bought them as a lighter alternative to some Rockport XOS waterproof hikers, for an upcoming long trip to Australia where I need maximum flexibility in shoes (day hikes, city walks, indoor activity). These aren't an improvement on what I already have - just too much there, too heavy, probably great for hiking but not something I want to wear all day. They don't claim to be waterproof but I wonder if they have the same thick material as the waterproof model. I returned them and have ordered an alternative MOAB Aventure shoe which feels much lighter (for unknown reason), and much more stylish looking.I did not get a chance to wear them on an outdoor walk as I didn't want to return them "used", so I can't vouch for their competence.3"stealth" hikers can almost pass for regular shoes. WIDE=4Enot a dress shoe, but the all leather construction, non-boot-style eyelets and the standard looking laces makes it less obviously a hiker. i plan to wear these on an upcoming trip- perfect for walking and day hikes, and passable going to a slightly formal restaurant for dinner.otherwise typical merrill shoes- very well made, sturdy, with good, grippy soles.i take wide, and i would compare these with the width of the 2vent wides, which is comparable to a new balance 4E.5Great ShoesFunny story...I bought these to go hiking during a trip to Sedona, AZ. My first day there it has rained pretty hard and as we started on the Sedona trail from the airport overlook, they picked up so much mud I had to turn around and go back to the car. After, that is, scraping them up against rocks and swirling them around in puddles. Why do I tell this story? It's just an example of how good they are. You get some serious good traction with these shoes. I ordered the size I wear in other shoes and they were an exact fit. Oh, and they look good too. Would buy again.5Take a Chance on These Shoes!I've never bought shoes online before, as I normally like to try them on first. So when I bought these, I took a chance. I even kept the box and all the tags, because if I didn't like them, they would be going right back to Amazon! I bought these shoes to replace my Columbia hiking shoes in which I had for over ten years, so my expectations were high. When I received them, I was impressed. Nice quality leather, all seams where the rubber met the leather seemed to have a tight seal, no gaps. It looked like a well made product. In fact, they looked so good, I thought they could probably pass for work shoes. So the next day I wore them to work with nice khaki pants and a nice shirt, and they worked great! In fact, my boss even threw me a "nice shoes" compliment. I've now been wearing these shoes to work every day for two weeks. They're very comfortable, and I love the leather look. They look great in jeans and shorts. I'm very satisfied with these shoes. They're now my main shoes. They were a little expensive, but they are very good quality, and I believe I will get many years of use of of them. Highly recommend.6 Month UpdateI love these shoes. I probably wear them 5 out of 7 days during the week. They're my main shoes, and I know I made the right decision when buying these. Highest quality and my highest recommendation!5Sore Feet - updated Jan 2019...Worse than everUpdate May 2019, my foot problems may be partially due to a problem with my foot tendons...although there is a bump where it shouldn't be....I'm upgrading from 1 star to 3 stars...since a large portion of my soreness has gone after several months.Update 2019 worse than ever, I definitely should have sent these back but I was a jackass and tried to Rambo through it and maybe they would work out. MISTAKE...the side of my outer foot is smollen on bottom and top...I can no longer wear the damn shoes...and this applies to the mid top version I bought as well....there is a small hump in the bottom of the shoe....defective...worse damn thing I ever bought. I DID NOT have this problem with my first Merrills.I've had Merrell's before and they felt fine. No problems before, BUT something has changed. My feet, between the mid section to right before my toes, wrapping around from bottom to top is constantly sore. To the point of being slightly painful. It doesn't happen with regular walking so much, but when hiking, with the extra flexing and bending it does. My shoes are off now and my feet are aching..and they will for hours. I should have sent them back immediately but I thought it was a break in issue and gave them a chance. Its been a few weeks and its getting worse. I might call Amazon because I bought 2 pair from different suppliers. 1 low top and 1 mid top. BEWARE!3Best work shoes ever.I wear these every day in a work environment where I spend 90% of my time in an office and 10% in the field. My field work includes construction sites and I never know when I might have to jump in a ditch to check out a job. These shoes are the best combination of "work casual" wear that will fit in at the office and "go anywhere shoes" that won't make you look stupid at a job site.I've bought several pairs over many years. Typically they will eventually get scuffed up enough that they start making me feel a bit self-conscious at the office after about a year of use. Then I buy another pair and retire the preceding pair to be my hiking shoes, as by then they are super-broke-in, comfortable and have tons of tread wear left. After a year or so of course I have another used pair coming out of "work service" so the hiking pair gets relegated to "yard shoes" as they work great for that too.The other thing I appreciate about these shoes is they still make them. I've been wearing them for a long time and you can still buy them today. Every time I find a pair of running shoes I like the manufacturer discontinues them. Even with work shoes...I used to wear Rockports...but the type I liked was discontinued and replaced with some cheap crap that I couldn't even wear two days in a row without getting blisters.Hats of to Merrell for making a great shoe and then sticking with it.5Disappointing QualityI am very disappointed in the integrity of this shoe. I bought them for a trip to Italy. My wife and I walk everywhere while on vacation averaging 10 or more miles per day. I have owned Merrell Moabs in the past and they were great. I've worn these less than 10 days and they are falling apart. The sole on the left shoe is detaching and there is a large gap.2This is a great shoe - be careful of color. This is great shoe. Firm, soft nubuck leather, excellent support, great for walking. The only down side is that the color (boulder) is not quite the same as it shows on the site. The color is actually a grayish/green, not light brown - in fact it's the same color as the rubber part of the sole (in the picture) where 'Merrell' is written. Nevertheless, for me it's not a fashion statement as much as function so a shade different is no big deal - but it might be for others. For me not sufficient to reduce stars below 5.5
