    Holds those bottles on rough trails.I purchased two of these, one for the road bike and one for the mountain bike. I wanted the adjustable cage because I'm always using or reusing various size bottles. The smallest setting holds those cheap, thin plastic water bottles you buy in the grocery store and the largest setting holds the standard size workout bottles that have the indentation around the top. Once installed on the mountain bike I hit the trail for a ten mile, single track trail ride. The trail consisted of everything from smooth hard packed soil to holes, rocks, ruts and roots. Rough enough to shake things apart. I ride my trails as fast as I can without loosing it and without abusing the bike. I tested the holder with three bottles, the standard sized bike bottle with the teeth pull opening, a Poweraid bottle that I reuse and the standard size, grocery store water bottle made out of the cheap thin plastic.The cage held all three size bottles at various fluid levels over the roughest terrain. Not once did any bottle get jarred loose or come close to falling out. Even the thin plastic bottle was held firm both full and empty. I stop to drink when trail riding and the bottles slide in and out of the cage easily. I actually put a little silicone on the rubber coating of the wire cage to facilitate removal. Not that it needed it but it did make it smoother. The cage passed this test with 100% and I am content with it.On the road bike one does not need to worry about the bottle falling out unless you get hit by another vehicle, in which case it will probably not concern you anyway. The bottles slide in and out easily and I am content with this application as well.I recommend this cage for both road and mountain biking as it holds the various size bottles you will use and holds them well. 5OK... but all plastic version is better.Bought one of these and also the all plastic version from Topeak (http://www.amazon.com/Topeak-Modula-Modified-Bicycle-Waterbottle/dp/B000ZKCLEI/ref=sr_1_12?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1396844759&sr=1-12&keywords=topeak). Needed a bike bottle cage for disposable water bottles. After installing both versions on our bikes I much prefer the all plastic model because it secures the bottles better without crushing them. Much easier to place and remove disposable water bottle from the plastic model. Finally, the metal version seems flimsy and less secure compared to plastic version. Paradoxical I know... but the plastic version has much higher quality design ("plastic" is high grade and strong yet flexible) and construction IMO compared to this metal model which vibrates, wobbles and tends to crush your disposable water bottles. I also found metal model harder to adjust (small button under unit hard to find and push versus yellow cap on plastic version which was easy). 3Not working with my 2.5" dia. stainless steel bottleI got this cage to replace my generic, boring, in-perfect-working-order bottle cage. I'd never gone wrong with Topeak, so I went for this one: I have a 24oz Hydro Flask with a diameter of 2.5", thought I could replace it with a bigger one and it would fit. Wrong. Luckily I didn't buy the bigger bottle: I can barely fit this one! I don't know if it's the friction between materials: rubber on the cage and stainless steel with a powder-coated matte finish on the bottle, but even when the cage is fully open (where you can put the largest bottles), it's almost impossible to put the bottle in or take it out. It even damaged the heavy duty paint on my Hydro Flask bottle -- you know what I'm talking about if you own or have ever touched a Hydro Flask -- that paint is impossible to damage... I've dropped my bottle dozens of times and haven't made a scratch, I've used my bottle on the Topeak Modula cage maybe half a dozen times and it's already scratched.Maybe this cage works well with plastic bottles -- I will try with a Polar bottle and edit my review -- but I like to keep my water ice cold, and the plastic bottles just don't do the trick. 2Works well, the mechanism seems finicky and wobbly if manhandled, but stays put and adjusts easily.Looks good, feels good, the mechanism is not cheap.The core of the sliding is a milled stainless screw. For almost all of your use of this product, you will use the quick and easy slide function:depress a metal button that utilizes the milled banks of the screw to slide the cage back and forth.A very nice touch is you can make small, "analog" adjustments of the cage by rotating the screw head seen as the silver circle between the two cage arms protruding from the base of the bottle holder.This will screw or unscrew the milled bolt found in the core of the slider.I doubt I will use this often, if at all, but I like that it's there.Why 4 stars instead of 5? If you grab hold of the metal cage-sliding portion, you can twist it about. It's not stiff, but it will stay in the position you slide it to. No worries about a lack of functionality, it just gives it a cheap feeling, albeit the plastic and metal is of good quality.Made in Taiwan (which is good and shows).You get what you pay for, for this price range, the PROS make up for this con.Not sure how it will hold up to lots of use, we shall see. 4Love it!!I love this cage. I m not a professional biker just so you know. But I have picked it up a few months ago and try to go out daily for about an hour or two. I ve been doing bike trails, streets and sidewalks. I ve bought this cage cause I wanted something small enough to hold a regular sized water bottle. I ve got to say I ve been on some bumpy rides and this holds it nice and snug. I thought I might have to use a hair tie to hold it in tighter, but NOPE, it stays in tight do to the Awesome rubber sides on the metal part. Out of curiosity I wanted to see if my hubbys 16oz Yeti Rambler would fit, cause he uses it daily, and it did. It seemed over sized tall wise but it fit in there nice and tight. Gonna try to upload photos and video to give you all an idea of what it looks like. Anyways, haven t had it long, I hope it holds out and doesn t brake cause so far I absolutely love it. (Ok so I m trying to upload the photos and video but it won t let me upload the video with the Yeti ... Sorry) 5That said I recently did a very rough dirt and gravel logging road ride and my bottle stayed in the cage just fine. I haven't riI wouldn't say it's a do it all really well bottle cage, but it is a do it all kind of well bottle cage. I was able to get my 40oz klean kanteen into it and then a standard size bottle. The big kanteen definitely stretches the boundaries of what you ought to do with it as the base barely fits. The regular size bottle doesn't fit particularly snuggly. That said I recently did a very rough dirt and gravel logging road ride and my bottle stayed in the cage just fine. I haven't ride tested the oversize bottle in it in similar conditions yet, but my hunch is it would work fine too. I have one of these http://www.topeak.com/products/Bottle-Cages/ModulaCageXL that I've used extensively for road touring and around town riding. It is, in my humble opinion a better solution for oversize bottles like the 40 oz Kanteen. It also works great with wine bottles (big plus) and plastic liter water bottles if you get desperate. 3This does a very nice job.I'm not giving this water bottle cage five stars because it barely is larger than your standard cage. I will not deny that it is a very nice water bottle cage but I thought I was going to have something a bit larger to hold bigger bottles like an Evian 1.5 liter container. It's not big enough for that. I currently use a 30 ounce water bottle by Rubbermaid (Water Bottle, 30 oz) and this container barely fits inside the Topeak cage.It was reasonably priced. The rubber coated wiring on the corners are great for creating a snug fit. Once I forgot my water bottle in its cage and threw my bike on the front rack of a city bus in order to have a long break from riding the city streets. When I exited the bus to get my bike I saw that my water bottle was still securely in place. With all the potholes and and heavy vibrations of riding a city street my water bottle was still safe, to my pleasant surprise. 4Good product, not as big as it seems.This bottle cage is perfect for precisely adjusting to smaller size bottles, but don't be misled into thinking you can carry a standard (32oz) nalgene in this thing. One of the pictures appears to be holding one, but it is actually a small steel bottle. Fully expanded, and with the metal part bent out a little bit, it still doesn't come close. Good cage, but not a solution for carrying large bottles. 3Smaller than i thought when fully unscrewed open.Bought this Topeak bottle cage to replace the Bontrager's RL bottle cage that I was originally using on my bike. My go to water bottle, Camelbak's insulated Podium big chill 25oz, is some what of a tight squeeze. And I believe the rubber "holders" on both sides gives i event more of a "grip" to the bottles exterior. There is a slight to moderate yanking effort just to get the bottle out, the trickier part is when you have to put the bottle back. I don't know if it will loosen on time and my worry now is if the screw adjustment rod will loosen as well which might compromise it's threading tightness. Otherwise, if you have a bottle that's even slightly smaller than the Podium insulated, this cage would be a nice thing to have in your bike. 4I like this one!great cage - are using this one on our elliptical trainer to replace the cheap one provided with it that broke .. this one is well made and the adjuster on the bottom is great .. at the max diameter setting is just right to hold a standard, large-sized (quart) cycling water bottle (the tall kind)..this cage seems really well made .. almost a little heavy duty for a road bike but would be great on a mountain bike and if you have different sized water bottles .. on the smallest setting it can hold a typical disposable poland spring 16 oz. type bottle, but it does seem like there's a bit of play side to side, so if you're using the cage on a bike and have a disposable bottle like that, it seems possible it could jar free on a bumpy road .. it's snug, but with the cage sides open, there is that chance.. overall though I think this is a great design for a cage, well made and since folks typically use reusable more standard diameter water bottles on a bike, I think it's great for them.. ! 5
