Customer Reviews

Update 11/27 Held up 25lbs, started showing signs of imminent failure. Cannot recommend.Update 11/27 Rack began rubbing on my rear tire 2 days into 12 day trip. Ugghh. Had 25lbs loaded in a compression bag, strapped cleanly on the rear rack. Rack had no wiggle on seatpost, solid attachment. It was the actual metal that began failing. Had high hopes, but proof is in the pics...Original review:The actual rack and it's attachment point sits about an inch off center from the seat post, although is acceptable enough for my needs. Welds look chunky (in a good way), seems durable enough for my intended use (singletrack, colorado bikepacking), and most importantly doesn't twist on my seat post nor bounce around when you get the clamp properly adjusted even when bouncing around on the trail. Better than the "name brand" racks at REI or big box retailers IMHO for a 1/3 price. 1Good: 1Didn't work for me.Good:1.Heavy duty construction. This thing appears to be adequately designed to hold a lot of weight. They claim 110lbs -- not sure about that, but unless you're transporting crates of hammers you won't need anything close to that. The tube that clamps to the seat post is a heavy duty aluminum extrusion - stiff and strong.2. Came with good instructions and even a link to a youtube video (that I didnt watch) to show how to install3. I was able to hang my ortlieb panniers on the rack and they fit perfectlyBad:1. The seat post clamp is absolutely huge, very wide. My legs hit it when I'm pedaling and it cannot be moved to a better position. On a 60 mile ride, I progressed from barely noticing it at the beginning to being really sore and uncomfortable by the end. It's unbearable really. I've decided to haul my stuff in a backpack on a 500 mile ride starting in two days rather than try to ride with this.2. It doesn't fit larger road bikes. I have a 58cm frame and the extensions that come down to the seat stays aren't long enough to reach the dropouts as it shown in the amazon picture. The problem is that the seat stays narrow as they go up and the extensions do not pivot inward to become narrower. Either a ball and socket or double u joint are needed here. Just a single pivot is used that only allows back and forth movement - not in and out.3. Be very careful clamping the extensions to the seat stays. If you have a high end aluminum bike with thin walled aluminum seatstays I wouldn't use this rack. You'd risk crushing the stay. I clamped this to a carbon frame - I heard a slight carbon pop as I tightened down the first clamp - I was probably a half turn away from ruining my frame. I imagine the clamps wouldn't be an issue at all on steel frames, especially steel with non-butted tubes. 2Works great with just a little adjustment and the right tools.Install wasn't too bad, but the included directions were only somewhat helpful. The included tools are absolute JUNK and make the install a royal pain. Don't bother with them unless you absolutely positively do not have ANY tools of your own to use. Also, I found it easier to install the top section first (the part that clamps onto the seat post), then the W-shaped hoops, then the bars that go down, and THEN the actual lower mounting sections. The directions have you mount the lower section first, and that just makes lining up the upper section a real chore, so ... yeah. There's that. Also, wound up with a bunch of leftover extra washers, bolts, and whatnot. No idea what they're intended for, as everything is installed as listed per the directions and everything, soooo ... extras in case you drop some and lose them, I guess.Once mounted, the only issues I've had (hence 4 stars instead of 5) are that the tension-lock bar going across the seat post prevents you from lowering the seat down as far as you might want/need (an issue for some of us shorter folks), and that tension-lock bar sticks out slightly to the left, so I keep catching the inside of my left thigh on there now and then - kinda hurts at times. I might wind up taking a Dremel tool and cutting/grinding that bar down a bit so it doesn't stick out so far. Also, the bars going down to the bike frame by the rear axle tend to bang/rattle/clank against the W-shaped saddlebag support bars. I was able to fix this by cutting two one-inch pieces of 3/8" rubber hose, splitting one side, adding a dab of Shoe Goo inside it to hold it in place, and sticking it between the support bar and W-shaped bar where they contact - no more rattle or clanking sounds.FWIW, I mounted a .50 caliber ammo can to this rack with zip ties and now I have a handy, secure, rain-proof container for transporting stuff while I'm pedaling around town for short runs and for small stuff. Sodas, bananas, beers, whatever... 4Bad support design that can cause you to crash!Do not buy. Poor design that can come loose and jam tire and make you get into a dangerous crash! The support bar is in 2 pieces and if they loosen enough the bar goes into your tire and jams it causing you to crash.Learn from my experience and buy a different design with a better support bar that won't jam your tire if it comes loose. Only buy one with a solid support bar or one with a very deep well (like a double inches deep) where they connect.I flew about 15 feet and rolled a few times and banged the crap out of my body and taking a good week for swelling of my knee and hip to go down.Do not buy this due to bad design. 1The rack is nice and tough and gets 4 stars. The hardware is gets ZERO starsThis rack is very tough, but all the nuts and bolts are awful. After using this rack for 6 mile rides almost daily since January, all the bolts are rusted and one of the bolts holding the support arm rusted through and broke off. Thankfully the hardware on the clamp that goes around the seatpost appears to be all aluminum is intact. The clamp itself is very strong and can handle the weight of my groceries, but i will need to hunt for replacement hardware for all of them. 4On my 3rd rack, heavy use, subjected to salt water, they break but what can you expect for $$?I get about 1 year out of these racks using them how I do. I configure them in a few different ways on two different bikes I use for fishing and carrying stuff in to the back country. They usually carry about 20 pounds, but on a mountain bike and I don't take it easy. They get beat up. They also get salt water on them, and one of them usually gets left outside for the majority of the year, thousands of miles on the back of my car. The first rack lasted about 2 years, kinda. I used it for two years but the supports broke and I rigged a different set up. Then all the welds failed the next year, all of them. I held it on with zip ties to the main shaft for a few days because I was remote and had no choice. The second one went even worse, it broke in about 8 months but that one lived outside, lots of use on trails, and sometimes carried 35 pounds or more. Real trails too. I will probably buy another one honestly, but I do debate trying some more rugged options that cost maybe twice as much. If I got a full year without anything breaking on one of those it would be worth it. Still, I think these are a good bargin. I debated 3 stars, but really, they are probably 3.5-4 so I rounded up. It is nice they work on just about any bike- I have used them on all kinds of frames and tires from 1.5" to 5" tires, and they come with plenty of parts I always have stuff left over. 4A very good carrier rack. This is a very sturdy cargo rack for its price, with great adjustment options to fit just about any bike.I had to do a little bit of adjustment myself to make it fit, which was easy to do, since the top rack itself can be slid back and forth and secured to new spots along the main shaft (which was a pleasant surprise, for me, since if it could not be moved, the rack would not have been able to fit my bike).I only have minor complaints about the condition of the parts that showed up (the rack and bars, not the screws and washers and so forth). They appeared to be slightly scraped as if they had been dragged against a rough surface or something hard hit them, but none of it got in the way of construction. Just minor aesthetic flaws, and nothing more. The two W-shaped side guards were also slightly too far apart to line up with the necessary screw holes, but a little bit of inward pressure bent them right into the exact spots that I needed them to be in.Another personal/not-necessarily-bad problem that I have with the rack is that the seat clamp uses a quick-release mechanism. I personally have no desire for using quick-release anything on my bike, so I would have liked it better if it came with some other more "permanent" securing option. I can probably find a properly-sized screw to use in its place, though, and the rest of its construction is solidly held down by screws against the rack and bike frame, so this is not really a bad thing, in the end.The bungee cord that came with it also seems very flimsy and thin, and I could not figure out how to secure it onto the bike. But this does not really matter to me, as I plan on using a pannier bag with this rack. If I actually do need bungee cords for whatever reason, I can just find smaller and thicker hooked ones to use for a more secure hold against the body.I almost bought another $15 rack from Walmart that could only carry up to 20 pounds, so at just double the price and a little over five times the overall carrying capacity, this was definitely worth the purchase. 5Worth the wait!Well worth the two week wait from China! I put this on my Mongoose Dolomite fat tire bicycle and it's perfect! Seems very sturdy yet lightweight. The hardware was of good quality and came with some extras. They throw in some thin bungee cord and a cute keychain as well. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. I read these other reviews, and yes, it does not come with instructions, but it's so easy to figure out that I think a 5 year old could put it together. Just look at the photos. The "W" shaped side bars did need some bending for the holes to line up right, but it was easy to do and I like how it's a good tight fit. It fit my seat post perfectly, but I guess some bikes come with really skinny seatposts. My Mongoose Dolomite has a 28.6mm thick seatpost. 5Worth every Penny paid...I use this rack for carrying a 20 pound Lithium Ion Battery pack bouncing on it. I take my bike on rides through trails and on the road. Bumpy rides destroyed all my previous racks. Now, this one It's solid.... I tried 2 other models that broke in half less than a few days of use. This one is solid and adjustable in many ways. You can slide the load carrying plate closer to the saddle or further back away from the saddle. This worked great for me because that allowed me to have a much better center of gravity (that battery is heavy). The two drop down support arms are sturdy and the brackets/clamps fit nicely around the frame. The pannier bag support brackets don't need to be installed to use this rack. They do come with all the needed hardware, tools and even a really cool cycling figurine keychain. 5Great bargain rear bike rackFor the price you won't beat this product. It can be installed as a simple quick release clamp on the seat post for easy removal (but keep in mind the weight limit should be kept under 15 pounds). Or you can install the arms and it will handle about 100 pounds.Installation: First use real tools (picture 1) the screws sit into waterproof nuts so turning them is difficult as it should be otherwise the nuts would eventually rattle off. Use a real adjustable wrench and an allen key into your cordless drill and installation becomes very easy.Install all screws with screw head facing outside, all the screws are longer than necessary to make connections easier, but you don't want to catch clothing on the exposed screw lengths. I was also surprised how far up my rear forks the connection needed to be to fit.Reflector came broken, but who cares. You want to install a "real" flashing reflector on the back anyway, the simple passive ones are worthless anyway. I recommend for $12 you get 2 of them atAscher USB Rechargeable LED Bike Tail Light 2 Pack, Bright Bicycle Rear Cycling Safety Flashlight, 330mah Lithium Battery, 4 Light Mode OptionsVery lightweight, very sturdy, a great deal. 5
